Day 5 Feb 24 – Standing Indian Shelter – 35.04206, -83.54800 –

13 miles today. I took it easy today and moved pretty slowly. I ended up on the trail at abou 8:30 instead of 10:00. Ah well, it gave me more time to plod along. The weather started out great today. It was sunny and warmed right up, but towards 1:00 it got cloudy, windy/blustery, and cold. It’s 4:30 and I’m huddled in my sleeping bag for the extra warmth and wind protection (the shelter isn’t doing to great of a job blocking the wind).
I’m now sure that I somehow passed Alleycat & Co. yesterday. I have a feeling they went for the resupply in Hiawassee. I jus hope they didn’t take a zero, or they’ll be forever behind at the rate I’m moving.

Tommorow I’m taking a side trail that cuts off a few miles and is all downhill. Then I’m not sure if I’ll hitch a ride into Franklin, NC or not, as I’m crossing the major highway that feeds it and it’s only a 10 mile hitch. I think I most likely won’t, and will resupply in Wesser in two days since I walk right through it and won’t have to hitch.

My hiker’s appetite has finally caught up with me. I had a hard time not muching on whats left of my food that still needs to last two days. I’m making a big pasta meal tonight so there’s some left over for lunch tommorow.

I saw a few day hikers today but not much else. Other than that, I don’t have anything else to report.

It’s 9:00 tonight and Alleycat, Juniper, and Salamander just showed up, Hallelulah. Finally it’s working out. I’m gonna hike with them for a while and SLOW DOWN. We are skipping that cutoff and doing the real thing, so it sets me back about a day. I’m totaly OK with that. Time to go back to sleep.

Until tommorow,

Seth “Osprey” Schumacher
