Challah is a special Jewish braided bread eaten on Sabbath and holidays. It is also named khale, barches, berches, Zopf, barkis, bergis, birkata in Judeo-Amharic, viano?ka in Slovak language, Tsoureki in Greek, kalács, cha?ka, colaci, and kitke.
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water
- 3 pkgs.or 3 Tbl yeast
- ¾ cups sugar
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup butter, melted and cooled
- 5 eggs, one for glaze
- 5-7 Cups Flour
Instructions
- Mix water, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, 4 eggs, and 3 cups of flour; let sit ½-1 hour. Add rest of flour and knead. Place in buttered bowl, butter top of dough, and let rise 2 hours. Punch down, shape, brush with mix of water and egg, and let rise again. Bake at 375º until golden brown (times are approx):
- -4 loaves 25-30 minutes
- -2 loaves 30-35 minutes)
